World Heritage yet again threatened by orthodoxy

A puritan Muslim group called Ansar Dine, which has been linked to Al Qaeda, is all determined to destroy the age old Islamic heritage of Timbuktu. The group has stormed the 14th-century Djingareyber mosque and destroyed two ancient shrines they found there. In an attempt to explain the act, the group has opined that as these traditions indulge in idolatry, something which is against the tenets of Islam, they are on a mission to purge the land of such bigotry. Wahabi radicals are posing a great threat to these ancient seats of African Islam, reports Newsweek.
