The Nemai Ghosh Photography archive, is a staggering compendium of more than a lakh and fifty thousand images, shot in analogue by the iconic photographer-artist, Nemai Ghosh. It holds rare and compelling images related to Satyajit Ray and other directors/personalities, theatre and performance shots, documentation of tribes from Bastar, Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh. Interspersed along with these are interesting chronicles of events and festivals, architecture and cityscapes and generally the pulse of life in Calcutta.

Our role

DAG invited the Eka team to archive and document this immense collection to make it more accessible for research and to open up for discussion its manifold facets. Eka has since 2009 worked on this material which ranges from negative sheets, contact sheets, glass slides, prints, negative splices and ephemera.

In 2013, the first exhibition from this collection was held. Titled ‘Nemai Ghosh: Satyajit Ray and Beyond’ and curated by Pramod Kumar KG, the Managing Director of Eka, the exhibition invited visitors to look at never-seen-before images for the Nemai Ghosh Archive.

In Phase-III, Eka completed working on the theatre and stage photography of Nemai Ghosh. Taken from the early 70s to mid 2000, this collection is a visual documentation of some of the most noteworthy as well obscure gems from the field of drama.
