CLIENT: Department of Culture, Bhutan
FUNDING AGENCY: The Bhutan Foundation, March 2020 – Ongoing
The Wangduechhoeling Palace in Bumthang, Bhutan was the first royal residence of the ruling royal Wangchuck Dynasty. It is the first example of mansion architecture in Bhutan, and was the seat of national power in the early 20th century.
The Department of Culture, Royal Govt of Bhutan & The Bhutan Foundation have engaged Eka Resources in planning the adaptive reuse of this historic building into a museum. The museum will offer a glimpse into Bumthang’s remarkable past, with the royal Wangchuck dynasty and the palace at the heart of the complex’s narrative. The museum will also provide an opportunity to experience the historical journey of the royal Wangchuck family and traditional living of the Bhutanese people.
The project aims to develop both the palace, and its precinct, into a significant cultural node in the Bumthang region.
