Chemould Prescott Road, formerly known as Gallery Chemould, was established by Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai in 1963. Chemould is one of the premiere institutions in the country focusing on modern and contemporary art. The gallery presents artworks by the leading artists across interdisciplinary and experimental mediums. Since its inception, Chemould has pioneered the early careers of prominent Indian artists such as S. H. Raza, M.F. Hussain, Tyeb Mehta, Bhupen Khakhar, Mehli Gobhai, Atul Dodiya, Anju Dodiya, Jitish Kallat, Pushpamala N. and L.N. Tallur among others. In 2007, the gallery moved to a larger space in a historic building at Prescott Road. Under the current directorship of Shireen Gandhy, Chemould continues to play a vital role in India’s contemporary art landscape.

Eka was assigned the task of creating a formal archive for the gallery. The archives captures the legacy of the gallery, particularly through the contributions of its founders Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy. The goal set before Eka and Chemould was for the archives to become a foundational entity that conveys the evolving story of the Modern & Contemporary art movement in India.
